2009 Lions Club 55th Annual Chicken Fry a Success!
This year's Bement Lions Club Chicken Fry, held on June 13th, has to be
rated as a success. Around 800 meals were served with folks lining up
way before the advertised serving time of 4:30. For two hours, the
serving lines were steady; business was brisk with sit-down diners as
well as take-outs.
The Lions have come a long, long way since the early days when chickens
were raised by members; slaw is no longer grated by hand and the desserts
are not homemade apple and cherry pie. However, certain traditions hold
fast such as the location- the Bement Forest Preserve, young helpers
flouring the chicken and a lot of hard work in preparation. This year's
chairman, Gail LeFever, did an excellent job of preparing, organizing,
and keeping things rolling.
An area band, the Tons O Fun Band, played during the Chicken Fry,
courtesy of the Bement Area Chamber of Commerce. Desserts were
available for purchase as a fundraiser from the Bement Band Boosters.
By the end of serving time, all the beans and coleslaw were gone and
only a very few pieces of chicken were left.

Bement Lion's Club Highway Clean-Up Day
Sunday, October 26 was Highway #105 Clean-Up Day for the Bement Lion's Club.
Even though it was an extremely windy day, there was work to do. Lions
(Gerald Dugan, Dana Jennings, Barney Camden, Tabitha Elder, David Elder
and Curtis Dillow) and 22 service learning students from Bement High School
participated in the two hour task.
After meeting at the Veterans Memorial Park at 2:00 p.m., two groups
were formed -one going north, the other south- past the city limits
signs. Workers donned bright orange work vests, and heavy gloves to
pick up litter and debris. Those great Lions Club trash bags sure
came in handy for the large amount of refuse found by the workers.
Curtis Dillow, who chaired the project, thanked the faculty of Bement
High School for giving students permission to use the highway clean-up
as a way to earn service learning hours. He said, "It was a good day!"
